It is the second largest suspended bridge in South America.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge remained opened for traffic until 1982, when various structural defects were detected. In 1983, the bridge recovery efforts were initiated, and soon interrupted for lack of financial resources.<\/p>\n<p>In 1994, an agreement for the Conceptual Project to Recover the Herc&iacute;lio Luz Bridge was entered into between DER\/SC, Steinman International Inc. and ESTEIO.
