COPASA MG − Sanitation Company of Minas Gerais − has the mission to provide better life conditions to the population and infrastructure for the economic and social development of the State, by offering water supply services, as well as sanitary and industrial sewage in the communities of Minas Gerais, matching their social and business purposes.

Through the Sewage Director Plan (SDP) it faces another challenge in the environmental scope, that is, to implement sewage collection and treatment in the cities of the Large Area of BH (including the City Pedro Leopoldo) which degrade Rio das Velhas.

These SDP’s integrate a set of wide environmental preservation actions in which it is implied the improvement of people’s life quality and health, especially of those with lower acquisition power.

As a cartographic support and action plan for COPASA projects, ESTEIO executed Mapping services through Digital Orthophotomaps and Digital Photogrammetric Capture in 1:2,000 scale in approximately 13 km² for COPASA, covering the interesting urban area in the City of Pedro Leopoldo − MG.

The purpose of the mapping is serving as basis for managing water supply and sewage collection and treatment networks, as well as for the planning and expansion of these networks.

Orthophotomaps were also used to plan joint actions with other bodies, aiming at the improvement of the city’s environmental conditions, the preservation of the riparian forests in valley bottoms, the management of the hydrographic basins, the pollution removal from water courses, planning of ground occupation, and others.

Products delivered to the client were constituted of orthophotomaps and planialtimetric stereocompilation, representing, through vectors overlapped to the image, significant elements of the terrain, such as street layout, type of paving, hydrography, main buildings, number of houses, altimetry through surveyed points and contour lines. In addition, other interesting elements can be detected through visual image inspection, such as type and density of vegetal coverage, type and volume of ground occupation, etc.

Mapping through digital orthophotomaps was shown as very useful for this kind of project and similar projects in which it is necessary to have a product that simultaneously presents map characteristics − homogeneous and known scale, graphic representation of relevant physical elements, topography, toponymy and the view of a real image of the terrain.
