According to FIG − International Federation of Geometrists − cadastre is defined as “Public inventory of methodically organized data regarding territorial shares, inside a country or district, based on the survey of their boundaries”.

The main purposes of the cadastre are: to ensure ownership, to serve as basis for government planning, to provide parameters for fair taxation / misappropriation / easement and to preserve the social function of the land.
