Hercílio Luz suspended bridge was concluded and opened for traffic in 1926. It is the second largest suspended bridge in South America.

The bridge remained opened for traffic until 1982, when various structural defects were detected. In 1983, the bridge recovery efforts were initiated, and soon interrupted for lack of financial resources.

In 1994, an agreement for the Conceptual Project to Recover the Hercílio Luz Bridge was entered into between DER/SC, Steinman International Inc. and ESTEIO. This agreement referred to the structural assessment efforts for bridge recovery and provided a maintenance guideline for the recovered bridge.
